What is a WMS (Warehouse Management System)?
A WMS, or Warehouse Management System, is software used to digitally control and optimise all processes within a warehouse. It manages, among other things, the receipt, storage, movement, picking, inventory and dispatch of goods.
A WMS provides real-time insight, control and efficiency in warehouse logistics.
π― What does a WMS do?
| Function | Description |
|---|---|
| Inbound management | Registration and storage of incoming goods (receipt, labelling) |
| Inventory management | Tracking exact locations and quantities (including batch/serial numbers) |
| Order picking | Driving pick orders via scanners, voice pick or pick-to-light |
| Dispatch (outbound) | Packaging control, label generation, link with transport planning |
| Cycle counting | Automated or scheduled inventory checks |
| Traceability | Full product traceability via GS1 or HIBC barcodes |
π WMS in OT environments
In production environments, a WMS often works together with systems such as:
- MES (Manufacturing Execution System) β linking production and inventory (e.g. raw material consumption)
- SCADA/PLC β in automated warehouses or with AGVs
- ERP β for financial processing, master data, customer orders
Example: a pallet with batch number L240725A is produced, automatically stored and
subsequently picked on a FIFO basis.
π WMS vs. ERP vs. MES
| System | Focus area | Role relative to WMS |
|---|---|---|
| WMS | Warehouse management, location management, logistics | Carries out physical inventory management |
| ERP | Company-wide, including inventory administration | Processes transactions and integrates with accounting |
| MES | Production process and traceability | Consumes and records material from the WMS |
π¦ Examples of WMS solutions
- Open source: Odoo WMS, ERPNext, OpenWMS
- Commercial: SAP EWM, Oracle WMS, Manhattan, Blue Yonder
- Industrial: Siemens Opcenter WMS, Rockwell Plex, SSI SchΓ€fer WAMAS
π In summary
A WMS digitises and optimises all warehouse processes. It is a crucial link between production, inventory management and logistics β and supports traceability, speed and error-free dispatch.
