What is a DataMatrix?
DataMatrix is a 2D barcode (also called a matrix code) that can store large amounts of data in a very small area. It is standardised under ISO/IEC 16022 and is widely used in sectors such as medical, electronics, food and manufacturing.
DataMatrix = a compact, error-tolerant barcode for complex, traceable data.
๐ Characteristics of DataMatrix
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| 2D code | A grid of black-and-white modules |
| Capacity | Up to ~2,300 characters (depending on type) |
| Error correction | Uses the ECC200 algorithm for high readability |
| Format | Square or rectangular (from 10ร10 modules) |
| Readability | Quickly read by cameras (not by laser scanners) |
๐งฑ What is DataMatrix used for?
| Application | Example |
|---|---|
| UDI labels (healthcare) | GTIN, LOT, expiry, serial number in one symbol |
| GS1 standards | AI data in compact form |
| Micro-labels on components | Electronics, PCBA, medical implants |
| Direct Part Marking (DPM) | Engraved or laser-marked on metal, plastic |
| LIMS, WMS, MES | Full traceability at item level |
๐งพ Example DataMatrix contents (GS1 structure)
(01)08711234567890 (17)260930 (10)BATCH1234 (21)SN567890
This DataMatrix contains:
- (01) GTIN
- (17) Expiry date
- (10) Batch number
- (21) Serial number
All data is encoded in a square barcode just a few millimetres across.
๐ DataMatrix vs. other barcodes
| Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| DataMatrix | Compact, lots of data, ECC, suitable for DPM | Only readable by cameras |
| GS1-128 | Common in logistics, readable by laser scanners | Larger label area required |
| QR Code | Popular in consumer apps | Less standard in industry |
โ Benefits of DataMatrix
- Small footprint = fits on tiny components
- Very high data density (multiple fields in one code)
- Error correction keeps it readable even when damaged
- Compatible with GS1 standards and UDI
- Perfect for medical devices, micro-components and direct marking
๐ In summary
DataMatrix is a powerful 2D barcode that stores large amounts of data in a small footprint and is error-tolerant โ ideal for traceability in medical and industrial applications.
