What is a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)?

A LIMS is a Laboratory Information Management System: a software platform used to manage, automate and digitalise laboratory processes. It supports sample registration, analysis planning, results management, traceability and reporting, among other functions.

LIMS = the digital heart of quality laboratories, often integrated with production, MES or Compliance systems.

🎯 What does a LIMS do?

Function Description
Sample registration Booking in samples (e.g. from production, receiving or environmental sources)
Analysis management Planning and tracking of test analyses and methods
Results recording Manual or automatic input of measurement values
Certificates & reports Automatic generation of quality certificates or rejection notices
Traceability Origin, analysis history and processing of every sample
Compliance Meeting requirements such as GMP, GLP, ISO 17025, FDA 21 CFR Part 11

🏭 LIMS in production environments

LIMS is widely used in:

  • Food industry – microbiological and chemical quality control
  • Pharmaceutical sectorGMP-certified QC laboratories
  • Chemicals & energy – water quality, raw material analyses, process monitoring
  • Environmental laboratories – air, soil and water samples
  • Industry – inline quality testing integrated with MES or SCADA

Example: every batch number from production is given a sample ID in the LIMS. Analysis values are automatically linked to the batch, and a release certificate is generated.

🔗 Integrations

System Integration with LIMS
MES Automatic provision of batch data and sample IDs
ERP Feedback of release or rejection to sales/logistics
Instruments Direct data link with analytical equipment (e.g. HPLC, ICP-OES)
SCADA Real-time sample alerts or triggers based on alarms

🔐 Importance for compliance

LIMS helps organisations meet:

  • FDA 21 CFR Part 11 (electronic data and signatures)
  • EU GMP Annex 11
  • ISO 17025 (testing laboratories)
  • Data Integrity (ALCOA+ principles)
  • Audit trail & version control

📌 In summary

A LIMS is essential for laboratories operating with high requirements for traceability, quality and Compliance. In a production environment, it is the digital link between analysis, release and process improvement.
