What is TSN?
TSN stands for Time-Sensitive Networking. It is a set of extensions to the standard Ethernet protocol (IEEE 802) that ensure deterministic, Real-time communication over standard networks.
TSN makes it possible to send time-critical industrial data over the same network as regular IT traffic — without delay or data loss.
TSN is essential in modern OT environments, particularly in applications such as Motion Control, robotics, SCADA, audio/video and automotive.
🎯 What does TSN do?
- Guarantees real-time delivery of data with low and predictable latency
- Avoids congestion and data loss through traffic shaping and time slots
- Allows different data flows with different priorities to coexist
- Provides synchronisation between devices using PTP (IEEE 802.1AS)
🧱 Key TSN components (IEEE standards)
| Standard | Function |
|---|---|
| 802.1AS | Time synchronisation (based on PTP) |
| 802.1Qbv | Time-based scheduling (time-aware shaper) |
| 802.1Qbu / 802.3br | Frame preemption for critical communication |
| 802.1CB | Redundancy and fault tolerance via frame replication |
| 802.1Qci | Ingress filtering and per-stream filtering |
| 802.1Qcc | Resource management and configuration of flows |
🔧 Why is TSN important?
- Replaces legacy field networks (such as Profibus and DeviceNet) with a single standardised Ethernet
- Supports convergence of IT and OT at network level
- Allows multiple protocols to run simultaneously: OPC UA, EtherCAT and ProfiNET with TSN
- Provides deterministic performance over standard infrastructure
- Important for Industry 4.0 and IIoT
🏭 Examples of TSN applications
- Real-time PLC control and Motion Control
- Synchronised robots or vision systems
- Energy management and network synchronisation (smart grid)
- Audio/video over IP in medical or automotive applications
- OPC UA over TSN for open industrial communication
✅ Benefits of TSN
- Deterministic communication over standard Ethernet
- Open standard – interoperability between manufacturers
- Reduces network complexity – fewer separate networks needed
- Future-proof – suited to high-speed automation
- Flexible and scalable for both small and large installations
📌 In summary
TSN makes Ethernet suitable for Real-time industrial applications, and forms the foundation for flexible, secure and standardised communication in modern OT networks.
