What is Modbus RTU?
Modbus RTU is a serial communication protocol used to exchange data between industrial devices such as PLCs, Sensors, Actuators, HMIs and measurement instruments.
RTU stands for Remote Terminal Unit and refers to the compact, binary format in which messages are transmitted. The protocol is part of the broader Modbus family, originally developed by Modicon (now Schneider Electric).
🧠 What does Modbus RTU do?
- Transmits measurement values, commands or status information between devices over serial lines
- Operates over RS-232 or RS-485
- Has a master-slave structure: the master initiates communication, slaves respond
- Is compact and efficient thanks to binary encoding
🔧 Key characteristics
| Characteristic | Description |
|---|---|
| Communication type | Serial (RS-485 or RS-232) |
| Structure | Master ↔ multiple slaves (1-to-many) |
| Data format | Binary (faster than the ASCII variant) |
| Addressing | Slave IDs from 1 to 247 |
| Typical baud rate | 9600 – 115200 bits per second |
| Maximum distance | Up to 1200 metres (via RS-485) |
| Protocol type | Open standard, broadly supported |
🏭 Example applications
- Connecting temperature sensors or pressure transmitters to a PLC
- Reading smart energy meters via SCADA
- Monitoring of water pumps or HVAC systems
- Controlling valves, relays or variable frequency drives
🔄 Modbus RTU vs. Modbus TCP
| Aspect | Modbus RTU | Modbus TCP |
|---|---|---|
| Physical layer | RS-485 / RS-232 | Ethernet (TCP/IP) |
| Speed | Lower (typically <115 kbit/s) | Higher (100 Mbit/s or more) |
| Topology | Bus structure | Star or switched network |
| Complexity | Simple | Simple |
| Use | Legacy or low-cost systems | Modern, network-based installations |
📦 Examples of Modbus RTU devices
- Schneider, Siemens, WAGO, ABB PLCs
- Smart energy meters and flow meters
- Temperature and pressure transmitters
- Motor controllers and relay modules
✅ Benefits
- Simple and robust
- Minimal cabling thanks to the RS-485 bus
- Open protocol, no licence required
- Ideal for legacy systems or simple applications
❗ Limitations
- No built-in security or encryption
- Limited bandwidth
- One master per network
- Susceptible to interference over long distances or in the presence of electromagnetic interference
📌 In summary
Modbus RTU is a simple and reliable serial communication protocol for industrial applications, with a long history and broad support. It is particularly suited to small-scale, cost-conscious or existing installations where Ethernet is not required or available.
