What is NEN 1010?

NEN 1010 is the Dutch standard for low-voltage installations, based on international IEC standards. It sets requirements for the design, installation and inspection of electrical installations, with the aim of ensuring safety for people, equipment and the environment.

NEN 1010 is mandatory for new construction, alterations and extensions of electrical installations in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

🧠 What does NEN 1010 govern?

  1. Protection against electrical hazards
  • Against electrocution, short circuits, over-current and over-voltage
  • Earthing, insulation, residual current devices, fuses
  1. Selection of materials and components
  • Cables, wiring, terminals, switches, distribution boards
  • Installation and environmental factors (temperature, moisture, chemicals)
  1. Installation practice
  • Cable routing, separation of currents, voltage drop
  • Protection of switchgear cabinets and machines
  1. Inspection and testing
  • Commissioning inspection and periodic inspection
  • Visual inspection, measurements and functional tests

The standard is binding through the Dutch Building Decree, the Working Conditions Act and CE marking. It also applies to control cabinets and MCCs.

🏭 Application in industrial automation

Examples:

  • Protection of people from contact with live parts
  • Cable selection and short-circuit calculations for variable frequency drives
  • Minimum IP rating of distribution cabinets in damp or dusty environments

🔍 NEN 1010 vs. NEN-EN-IEC 61439

Standard Application Focus
NEN 1010 Installation of electrical systems Safety of users/installation
NEN-EN-IEC 61439 Assembly of distribution and switchgear cabinets Technical cabinet design and performance

🔐 Safety considerations

  • Earthing systems: TT, TN, IT – depending on application
  • Short-circuit withstand: cable calculation and selectivity
  • Protective measures: IP rating, double insulation, residual-current devices
  • EMC measures and separation of power and signals
  • Thermal load: cable cross-section and cooling matched to the load

NEN 1010 sets requirements based on risk management and operating environment.

📌 In summary

NEN 1010 is the central standard for safe and well-functioning electrical installations, from homes to industrial automation. Its application is required by law and forms the basis for design, implementation and inspection.
