What is NEN-EN-IEC 61439?

NEN-EN-IEC 61439 is the international standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, such as control cabinets and MCCs. It sets requirements for the safety, reliability and performance of electrical assemblies up to 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC.

The standard ensures that electrical assemblies meet legal and technical requirements and are safe to install, use and maintain.

🧠 What does NEN-EN-IEC 61439 govern?

  1. Constructional requirements
  • Mechanical strength, IP protection, insulation distance
  • Mounting of components, cable management, ventilation
  1. Thermal behaviour
  • Heat generation inside the assembly
  • Permissible temperature rise of components
  1. Electrical safety
  • Short-circuit withstand, leakage current, dielectric strength
  • Earthing and insulation resistance
  1. Documentation and type verification
  • Verification by testing, calculation or design analysis
  • Specification of operating conditions and permissible tolerances

Instead of the old “Type Test Assemblies (TTA)”, IEC 61439 introduces the verification principle, which allows greater flexibility.

🏭 Application in industrial environments

  • Design and manufacture of:

  • Control cabinets for machines and processes

  • Motor Control Centres (MCCs)

  • Power distribution cabinets and field cabinets

  • Required for:

  • CE marking

  • Delivery of installations under NEN 1010, the Machinery Directive or ATEX

The standard is mandatory for both manufacturers and panel builders that assemble switchgear and controlgear assemblies.

🔍 Key parts of NEN-EN-IEC 61439

Part Description
61439-1 General rules for all assemblies
61439-2 Specifically for power switchgear (e.g. MCC)
61439-3 For domestic installations (small users)
61439-5 For installation on construction sites
61439-6 Coupled busbar systems (e.g. modular MCCs)

🔐 Safety and quality considerations

  • Safe operation through correct IP classification and protection against contact
  • Emergency stop provisions and separation of control and power circuits
  • EMC design to limit electromagnetic interference
  • Thermal analysis when several power supplies or VFDs are present
  • Clear markings, labels and diagrams

Panel builders are required to provide a declaration of conformity and a documentation package.

📌 In summary

NEN-EN-IEC 61439 is the standard for safe and reliable electrical control and distribution assemblies. Applying this standard is essential for the design, assembly and acceptance of industrial cabinets.
