What is IEC 61439?
IEC 61439 is the international standard for the safety, performance and construction of low-voltage switchgear assemblies, such as control cabinets and control panels in industrial environments. The standard applies to both standard panels and bespoke installations for production facilities, water treatment or energy supply.
In an OT context, IEC 61439 governs the technical requirements for control cabinets housing PLCs, power supplies, relays and other components. It safeguards safety, continuity and electrical reliability.
๐ง What does IEC 61439 cover?
- Mechanical and thermal performance โ The enclosure must meet load requirements
- Temperature rise โ Internal heat must not lead to component overheating
- Short-circuit withstand โ The cabinet must withstand short-circuit currents
- IP rating โ Protection against dust and moisture (e.g. IP54, IP65)
- Insulation distances โ Safety against contact and breakdown voltages
- Construction and assembly โ Positioning, cable routing and earthing
๐ฆ When does IEC 61439 apply?
| Area of application | Examples |
|---|---|
| Machine control panels | Panels containing PLCs, power supplies, HMIs and protective devices |
| Main distribution boards | Incoming distribution for industrial or utility installations |
| Sub-distribution boards in production halls | Distribution for machine power, lighting or HVAC |
| Mobile control cabinets | Temporary setups on construction sites or test rigs |
| Panels in explosive zones | In combination with ATEX requirements, requires adapted construction |
โ Main parts of the standard
| Part | Description |
|---|---|
| IEC 61439-1 | General requirements for all low-voltage switchgear and controlgear |
| IEC 61439-2 | Specific to power switchgear (>125A) |
| IEC 61439-3 | For small distribution boards (e.g. sub-distribution in buildings) |
| IEC 61439-5 | For installation cabinets in public networks (e.g. street cabinets) |
| IEC 61439-7 | For specific applications such as charging stations or maritime installations |
๐ IEC 61439 vs. other standards
| Standard | Scope |
|---|---|
| IEC 61439 | Safety and performance of electrical switchgear assemblies |
| IEC 60204-1 | Electrical equipment of machines (wiring, safety) |
| IEC 61010 | Measurement and test equipment |
| IEC 60079 (ATEX) | Explosion safety in hazardous areas |
| NEN 1010 | Dutch standard for low-voltage installations |
โ ๏ธ Common practical mistakes
- No verification of heat development in densely populated cabinets
- Use of components outside the IP classification for the environment
- Incorrect short-circuit value entered in the manufacturerโs declaration
- No proper earthing or surge protection provided
- Cabinets not tested or assessed in line with the correct construction variant (design verification)
๐ In summary
IEC 61439 is the standard for safe and reliable electrical switchgear assemblies. In OT systems, it is essential that control cabinets meet this standard to prevent outages, fire risks and threats to personnel and processes.
