What is EtherNet/IP?

EtherNet/IP stands for Ethernet Industrial Protocol. It is an industrial communication protocol that uses standard Ethernet technology to exchange data between industrial devices such as PLCs, Sensors, Actuators, HMIs and robots.

EtherNet/IP is based on TCP/IP and UDP/IP and uses the CIP protocol (Common Industrial Protocol) for structuring communication.

It is managed by ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendors Association) and is one of the most widely used industrial Ethernet protocols worldwide.

🧠 What does EtherNet/IP do?

EtherNet/IP:

  • Connects industrial devices via standard Ethernet
  • Supports Real-time I/O communication
  • Uses both cyclic (periodic) and explicit messaging
  • Integrates well with existing IT networks

🔧 Key features

Feature Description
Protocol stack Based on TCP/IP, UDP/IP and CIP
Transport type I/O data via UDP, management via TCP
Topology Flexible: star, line, ring, tree, mesh
Speed 100 Mbit/s or 1 Gbit/s (depending on network hardware)
Real-time behaviour Sufficient for many automation applications
Device discovery Automatic detection of devices (plug-and-play)
IT integration Strong: uses standard Ethernet and IP protocols

🏭 Application examples

  • PLC communication with Remote IO or HMI
  • Driving motor controllers and drives
  • Data exchange between machines or production lines
  • Integration with SCADA or MES
  • Robot control in assembly or packaging lines

🔄 EtherNet/IP vs. other industrial protocols

Aspect EtherNet/IP ProfiNET Modbus TCP
Physical layer Standard Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) Ethernet Ethernet
Protocol stack TCP/IP + CIP TCP/IP + ProfiNET TCP/IP
Real-time behaviour Good (UDP/IP for I/O) Better with real-time extensions Limited
Management features Extensive (CIP object model) Highly implementation-dependent Simple
Use Versatile Predominantly Siemens environments Simple, universal

📦 Examples of compatible devices

  • Allen-Bradley PLCs (Rockwell)
  • IFM Sensors and modules
  • Bosch Rexroth motors and drives
  • HMI panels with EtherNet/IP support
  • Industrial robots (e.g. Fanuc, ABB)

📌 In summary

Ethernet/IP is a widely used industrial Ethernet fieldbus that enables reliable and fast communication between automation devices. Thanks to its use of standard Ethernet, it integrates easily with IT systems and can be flexibly deployed in modern production environments.
