What is a Circuit Breaker?

A circuit breaker (also known as an MCB or miniature circuit breaker) is a reusable electrical protective device that automatically interrupts the circuit on overload or short-circuit. Unlike a fuse, a circuit breaker does not need to be replaced after tripping; it can simply be reset.

Circuit breakers protect cables, installations and equipment, and are standard equipment in industrial distribution panels and control cabinets.

🧠 How does a circuit breaker work?

  1. Overload
  • Thermal element (bi-metal strip) bends under prolonged overcurrent
  • Switches off the circuit automatically
  1. Short-circuit
  • Electromagnetic coil trips immediately on high peak currents
  • Reaction time in milliseconds
  1. Resettable
  • Manually reset after the fault is resolved
  • No replacement required as with fuses

🏭 Use in industrial installations

  • Protection of supplies in MCCs or control cabinets
  • Connections for machines, motors and PLC systems
  • Protection of lighting, sockets and power supplies
  • Field protection for I/O modules, power supplies and sensors

The choice of circuit breaker depends on current, load type and the desired tripping characteristic.

🔍 Circuit breakers vs. fuses

Feature Circuit breaker Fuse
Reusable Yes No — single use
Tripping speed Thermal and electromagnetic Melt wire only
Resettable Yes No, replacement required
Maintenance Easier More time-consuming
Installation cost Slightly higher initially Lower, but higher replacement cost

For critical applications, circuit breakers and fuses are often combined.

🔐 Safety considerations

  • Choose rated current (In) based on cable capacity and load

  • Tripping characteristic (B, C, D):

  • B: fast tripping (light load)

  • C: standard (motors, mixed load)

  • D: slow (high inrush currents, transformers)

  • Selectivity between main and final circuits is required

  • Part of Lock-out Tag-out or work permit procedures during work on installations

  • Regular inspection of thermal load and correct operation

In ATEX environments, circuit breakers with explosion-proof enclosures are required.

📌 In summary

A circuit breaker is a smart, reusable protective device against short-circuit and overload in electrical installations. It is a reliable solution for safe and efficient power distribution in industrial environments.
