What is PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)?

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) refers to aids that protect employees against hazards in the workplace. It forms the last line of defence against risks that cannot be eliminated through technical or organisational measures.

PPE is mandatory when risks cannot be sufficiently controlled through source-based or collective protection, as required by the Dutch Working Conditions Act.

🧠 Types of PPE in industry

  1. Head protection
  • Safety helmet against falling objects or impacts
  • ATEX-certified helmets for explosion-hazard zones
  1. Eye and face protection
  • Safety goggles, face shields against dust, sparks and chemicals
  1. Hearing protection
  • Ear plugs or ear defenders at high noise levels (>80 dB)
  1. Respiratory protection
  • Dust masks, half-face masks or full-face masks for vapours/gases
  1. Hand and arm protection
  • Cut-resistant, heat-resistant or chemical-resistant gloves
  1. Foot and leg protection
  • Safety footwear with steel toecaps, antistatic or ATEX-proof
  1. Fall protection and harness
  • When working at height or in confined spaces
  1. Clothing
  • Flame-retardant clothing, high-visibility clothing, antistatic clothing

🏭 PPE in industrial environments

PPE is essential when:

The employer must provide PPE, maintain it and monitor its use.

🔍 PPE vs. collective measures

Type of measure Example Priority
Source measure Eliminating the hazard High
Collective measure Extraction, shielding, safety sensor Medium
PPE Helmet, goggles, hearing protection Lowest (last resort)

PPE is effective, but depends on correct use by the employee.

🔐 Compliance and safety considerations

  • PPE must be CE-certified (in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/425)
  • Correct selection per task, risk and working environment
  • Maintenance, replacement and hygiene are mandatory
  • Instruction and training in correct use is essential
  • Integrated into safety policy, risk assessment and work-permit procedures

Poorly maintained or incorrectly used PPE provides only a false sense of safety.

📌 In summary

PPE is indispensable for personal safety in high-risk working environments. It forms the last line of defence and requires attention to selection, use and maintenance.
