What is a Star-Delta connection?
A Star-Delta connection (also known as Star-Delta or Y-Δ) is a widely used method for starting three-phase motors gently. The technique reduces the inrush current and prevents voltage dips in the electrical network when starting large motors.
In OT environments, star-delta is often used in production lines, pump systems, fans, and compressors, where a direct start would impose too great a load.
🧠 How does it work?
- Start in Star (Y) – The motor windings are connected in star. This reduces the phase voltage by a factor of √3 and the current drawn to roughly 1/3.
- Switch to Delta (Δ) – After a few seconds, the system automatically switches to delta, in which the motor runs at full mains voltage.
The changeover is often performed by a PLC, time relay, or soft starter.
