What is LEAN?

LEAN is a management philosophy and improvement methodology focused on eliminating waste, optimising processes and delivering maximum value to the customer.

The essence of LEAN: do only what adds value โ€” and eliminate everything else.

LEAN originated at Toyota (as part of the Toyota Production System) and is now applied worldwide in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, construction and services.

๐ŸŽฏ Goal of LEAN

  • Identify and eliminate waste
  • Reduce lead times
  • Increase quality
  • Engage employees in continuous improvement
  • Put customer value at the centre

๐Ÿงฑ The 5 LEAN principles

  1. Value โ€“ What does the customer really want?
  2. Value stream โ€“ Which steps contribute to that value?
  3. Flow โ€“ Let the process run smoothly and without interruption
  4. Pull โ€“ Work based on demand, not on stock
  5. Perfection โ€“ Strive for continuous improvement (Kaizen)
