What is an HIBC barcode?
An HIBC barcode (Health Industry Bar Code) is an international identification standard developed for medical devices, pharmaceutical products and healthcare applications. HIBC ensures reliable identification, tracking and traceability of products within hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories and medical production environments.
HIBC = a standard barcode language for healthcare, managed by the Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC).
🔧 What does an HIBC barcode contain?
An HIBC code consists of two parts:
1. Primary data structure
Contains the basic product number, the manufacturer code and optionally a packaging level.
Example: +A123B45678C
+= Start character (HIBC identifier)A123= Manufacturer codeB45678= Article or catalogue numberC= Check digit (verification)
2. Secondary data structure (optional)
Contains additional data such as:
- Expiry date
- Lot or batch number
- Serial number
Example: /A010925L12345678
/= separatorA= Date code (format and meaning depend on implementation)010925= Expiry date (e.g. 25 Sep 2025)L12345678= Lot or serial number
📦 Barcode formats
HIBC codes can be represented in various symbologies:
- Code 128 (1D, linear)
- DataMatrix (2D, compact – widely used on small products)
- QR code (optional)
HIBC allows multiple data fields in a single barcode — much like GS1, but with a different structure.
🏥 Where is HIBC used?
| Application | Examples |
|---|---|
| Medical devices | Syringes, catheters, test kits |
| Pharmaceutical products | Packaging of ampoules, vials, tablets |
| Hospital logistics | Patient identification, medication dispensing, inventory management |
| Traceability in production environments | Batch records, serial number linkage, UDI compliance |
🔁 HIBC vs. GS1 barcode
| Feature | HIBC | GS1 |
|---|---|---|
| Target audience | Healthcare, pharma | Broad (retail, logistics, food, healthcare) |
| Structure | HIBC primary + optional secondary | Application Identifiers (AIs) |
| Start character | + or / for identification |
No fixed start character |
| Managing organisation | HIBCC | GS1 Global |
| Flexibility | More implementation freedom | Stricter, standardised structure |
| UDI compliance | Yes (for FDA and EU MDR) | Yes |
📌 In summary
HIBC is a barcode standard for healthcare, with a unique structure and versatile applications for traceability and safety. It is recognised worldwide and complies with UDI guidelines from the FDA and EU.
